Offshore trolling for both gamefish and billfish had been producing excellent catches for the month leading up to the 44th annual Northeast Florida Marlin associations Bluewater tournament, sponsored by Nimnicht Chevrolet. Epic catches of 40 to 50 Mahi-Mahi had become routine this spring and dozens of heavy wahoo had hit the docks over the previous weeks. Even the billfish had been cooperating with several big Sailfish and Blue Marlin released. Even the weather had been cooperating with a mild spring pattern that provides for light southerly breezes and mild swells. So perhaps the tournament committee shouldn't have been surprised by the forecast that indicated the first tropical storm of the season, on Memorial Day weekend, bringing high winds and heavy seas.
